Will Carol win the Palme D'Or, Cannes most Coveted Prize? (NOPE ... but ...)

Scroll down to see who did win ...

It's the final day of Cannes; it's 6pm in France where the announcement of the coveted Palme D'Or prize is just hours away—the event begins at 6:30pm. Carol, one of the movies we've been chatting about, is being talked about for the big prize. Here in L.A. as I enjoy a Slacker Sunday coffee in bed, I've found some video interviews with the film's stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara plus director Todd Haynes.

One thing which we keep hearing is how Hollywood—and the men that run it—keep nixing female-driven films because they say no one goes to see them. What they mean is men don't go to see them, but women do, in droves, and there are plenty of us to support more female stories. So while Carol is being touted as a lesbian love story, presumably it's one that not just lesbians will love. Actually, as I think about it, knowing there are some explicitly sexual scenes between the two actresses, this will be a woman's movie that does draw in the men. The guys do seem to love all that girl on girl action.

One of the film's producers, by the way, is Carol Vachon, who also produced Still Alice. "Still Alice" she notes, "Not Still Alice & John."

Other films being talked about for the prize are Son of Saul, Asif Kapadia’s Amy, his study of Amy Winehouse, Matteo Garrone’s Tale of Tales, the surreal adaptation of16th-century folk tales which we've looked at hereMichel Franco’s Chronic starring Tim Roth, StĂ©phane BrizĂ©’s, The Measure of a Man and the martial arts fable The Assassin.

DREAMING OF GOING TO CANNES? YOU'RE DREAMING OF FRANCE

I'll update the post when I find out if Carol took the Palme D'Or; I'm betting it does. Good think my bet was all take, no money!
While Rooney Mara won Best Actress for Carol (not Cate!) the winner of the Palme D'Or was a movie most of us haven't heard of
and many of us won't see. Dheepan directed by Jacques Audiard. You can watch a clip here And see the complete list of winners here at the official site of the Cannes Film Festival.
